Sports Center Ignored Asbestos Warnings for Five Years

English lawmakers are calling for a public inquiry as to why a popular recreation center ignored asbestos warnings that put staff and visitors at risk for exposure. Five years ago managers at the Woodhouse Close Leisure Complex were warned about asbestos in the center’s boiler room.

The report came to light in August when the center was fined £18,000 for failing to remedy the problem. The magnitude of exposure is unknown but current and former staff members are worried that they may be at risk of developing health problems in the future.

There is an ongoing investigation and lawmakers have asked the council to schedule a public inquiry to report the results.
