New Plymouth Power Plant Closes for Asbestos Remediation

New Plymouth, NZ – A New Plymouth power plant will be closed for the next six months while asbestos is removed from the site.

Recent inspections found asbestos in the plant’s turbine hall and boiler room which forced the facility to close.

Plant officials downplayed the risk of exposure but called for the shutdown as a precautionary measure and encourage current and former employees to contact them if they have any concerns.

Some staff will remain onsite while others are transferred to offices and other facilities.

Power services will not be affected and the company expects to restart two of the generators by next May.
