MP Calls for Reversal of Pleural Plaques Decision

Calling the recent ruling “nonsense” a Carlisle MP is hoping to reinstate financial compensation for people who suffer from pleural plaques.

Earlier this month, the Law Lords ruled that pleural plaques did not represent a “life threatening” condition which left thousands of British workers unable to file claims.

Pleural plaques are cluster of benign scar tissue within the lungs. Their presence can lead to worse conditions like mesothelioma but it is not always 100%.

The county of Cumbria (which includes Carlisle) has been hit hard by asbestos related conditions with at least 160 deaths over the past seven years.

30 other members of parliament have shown support for a motion to dismiss the Lords ruling. They were able to successfully overturn another ruling that stated that individuals could not collect compensation from multiple asbestos defendants.
