Queensland Completes Successful Roof Replacement
A plan by Queensland State Government to replace asbestos containing roofs in schools across the state has been completed nearly seven and a half years ahead of schedule.
The project involved 919 roofs including 93 in the Wide Bay-Burnett school district.363 had been replace by the end of the first year with 859 completed by the second year. Contractors worked holidays and weekends to ensure that students and faculty would not be present while work was being conducted.
Government officials called the program a success and the first of its kind within Australia.
However there was criticism regarding floor tiles and other asbestos containing materials that have not been replaced that critics feel represent a greater health threat.
