Health Office Closes Following Asbestos Complaints

A public health office in Guelph, Ontario has been closed due to asbestos contamination. Nearly 100 staff members have been reassigned to other offices while the asbestos is being removed.

The move to close the office was spurred by numerous complaints with one employee reporting that asbestos fibers were collecting on desks and other work areas.

Testing revealed that air coming from the ventilation system contained nearly double the permissible concentration of asbestos as set by the Ministry of Labour. The asbestos is believed to be coming from vermiculite insulation.

The near 40-year-old facility handles a number of outpatient and testing services for the city which is located about 60 miles west of Toronto and has over 100,000 residents.
